How to block adult content on Telegram.

Written October 2026. Telegram changes its menus often.

Telegram is a messenger, and it is also a directory of public channels and groups that anyone can start and almost anyone can find. It moderates after the fact. For a lot of men it is where it starts: a channel found through search, a group someone added them to, a bot, a message from a stranger who got the number from somewhere.

This page does two things. First, what Bramble does about it. Then everything Telegram gives an adult: what each setting changes, what it does not, and the one tap that can undo the filter without you meaning it to.

What Bramble does about Telegram

Bramble is a free adult content blocker for iPhone, and it works on the phone you are holding. Its protections run across every app, not only the browser.

It is free, forever, and no one gets a list of what you looked at — not your witnesses, not your Keyholder, not us. The blocking page has the full account.

The rest of this page is Telegram’s own settings. They work without Bramble, and they are worth doing. Bramble works on the pictures. The settings work on who and what reaches you, and that is the part no filter can do, because to Telegram a swimsuit photo is not sensitive.

What Telegram does not offer an adult.

  • Telegram’s filter hides media that Telegram has marked as sensitive. Swimsuit photos, flirty creators and spam bots are usually not marked, and from how the filter is built, nothing blurs them.
  • Channels and groups decide what is posted, and moderation is reactive.
  • There is no keyword filter and no “hide suggestive content” switch. We found no way to turn off search across public channels, or recommended channels.
  • There is no lock. Every setting here can be changed back by you, alone, and one of them with a single tap.

If you are setting this up for a child rather than for yourself, this page is not the right place to start. It is written for an adult doing it for himself.

Check the 18+ filter is on

  1. In Telegram, tap Settings, then Data and Storage.
  2. If you see Show 18+ Content, make sure it is off. Its caption reads “Do not hide media that contain content suitable only for adults.”
  3. On a computer, open Telegram, then Settings, Privacy and Security, Sensitive content, and make sure Disable filtering is not ticked.

On many iPhones that row is not shown at all, which is the safe state: it means Telegram is not offering to turn the filter off. If you can see it, the filter was switched off somewhere else, or Telegram requires an age check where you live. It is an account setting, so a change made on a computer or the web reaches your phone. Check both.

The tap to avoid. When Telegram blurs something, it shows an 18+ Content alert with View Anyway and a box labelled Always show 18+ media. Do not tick the box. Ticking it turns the filter off for your whole account, with no passcode and no second question.

Stop media arriving on its own

  1. In Settings, Data and Storage, tap Auto-Download Media.
  2. Turn it off for each of Using Cellular and Using Wi-Fi, and for contacts, other private chats, group chats and channels.
  3. Turn off Save Incoming Photos, which writes pictures into your iPhone’s Photos library.

This stops pictures being fetched before you ask. It does not stop you opening them, and small blurred previews may still show.

Close the door on groups and strangers

  1. In Settings, Privacy and Security, tap Groups. Under Who can add me to group chats, choose My Contacts or Nobody.
  2. Tap Phone Number. Set who can see it, and who can find you by it, to Nobody.
  3. Tap Messages to see who can write to you.

Restricting who can message you to your contacts needs Telegram Premium, and any Premium user can still write to you. Group settings do not stop you joining a group from a link or a search.

Leave, block and hide

  1. In a group or channel, choose Leave Group or Leave Channel. For spam, choose Report Spam, or Report Spam and Leave in a group.
  2. For a person, choose Block User. For a bot, Stop Bot.
  3. To hide someone’s Stories, press and hold their ring and choose Hide Stories.

Blocking and reporting work one account at a time, and new channels keep appearing. Telegram’s search finds public channels and posts from channels you have not joined. We found no setting that turns it off, so the only protection is not searching.

The one that holds

Telegram has no setting that is hard for you to remove. Passcode Lock locks the app on one phone, but it does not pin any setting, and deleting the app and signing in again gets around it. So the lock has to live outside Telegram. A limit set in your iPhone’s own Screen Time belongs to the phone, and it can be put behind a passcode you do not know.

  1. Open the iPhone’s Settings, then Screen Time. If it is off, turn it on.
  2. Tap App Limits, then Add Limit.
  3. Find Telegram in the list and tick it. The list has a search box at the top. Then, at the bottom of the list under Websites, tap Add Website and add web.telegram.org and telegram.org. Without that, a limit on the app does not cover it in Safari.
  4. Tap Next, set the time, and turn on Block at End of Limit.
  5. Back on the Screen Time page, tap Lock Screen Time Settings and set a passcode that someone you trust chooses and keeps. Without it, you can extend your own limit with one tap.

That last step is what Bramble’s Keyholder mode is for. The keyholder walk-through takes the person you ask through setting it on your phone, one screen at a time.

If it is still there afterward

Settings change what the screen offers. They do not change what you are reaching for. When a man has cleaned up his settings and still goes looking, it is usually because something else is being eased, and porn is only the fastest thing he found for it. That is not a verdict on you.

The ten questions are one honest place to look at it. Why can’t I stop watching porn is the longer version.
