How to block adult content on Reddit.

Written October 2026. Reddit changes its menus often.

Reddit allows adult content in communities that label themselves NSFW, and a lot of what pulls a man is not labelled at all: swimsuit photos, flirty posts, fitness pictures that are not about fitness. It also sorts everything by what you open, which means the more you look, the more it brings.

This page does two things. First, what Bramble does about it. Then everything Reddit gives an adult: what each setting changes, what it does not, and the one that is not in the app.

What Bramble does about Reddit

Bramble is a free adult content blocker for iPhone, and it works on the phone you are holding. Its protections run across every app, not only the browser.

It is free, forever, and no one gets a list of what you looked at — not your witnesses, not your Keyholder, not us. The blocking page has the full account.

The rest of this page is Reddit’s own settings. They work without Bramble, and they are worth doing. Bramble works on the pictures. The settings work on who and what reaches you, and that is the part no filter can do, because to Reddit a swimsuit photo is not sensitive.

What Reddit does not offer an adult.

  • The iPhone app has no mature-content switches. Reddit says they were removed under Apple’s rules. They are set on reddit.com in a browser, and they carry over to the app.
  • NSFW is a label set by posters and moderators. Unlabelled posts are not covered by any setting.
  • Reddit says it tries to keep mature content out of recommendations unless you subscribe or have shown interest, and that even then it may be limited. That is an aim, not a guarantee.
  • We found no keyword filter and no “no suggestive content” setting. Muting is one community at a time.
  • There is no lock. Every setting here can be changed back by you, alone.

If you are setting this up for a child rather than for yourself, start with Reddit’s own age and family settings. This page is written for an adult doing it for himself.

Leave mature content off

  1. In Safari, go to reddit.com and sign in.
  2. Open Settings, then Preferences.
  3. Find Show mature (18+) content and make sure it is off. Reddit’s own pages also call it Show NSFW Content (18+). If you see Blur mature (18+) images and media, leave that on too.
  4. In search, keep Safe Search on. Restart the app so it picks the change up.

An account that once turned this on stays on, so check it even if you think it is off. Reddit does not say what an adult starts with. In the UK, the EU and some other places it asks for an age check before it shows mature content, and that check unlocks content. It is not a filter.

Mute the communities

  1. On a community’s page, tap the three dots and choose Mute, which Reddit labels with the community’s name, like Mute r/name.
  2. To see and undo them all, tap your profile picture, then Settings, your username under Account settings, then Safety, then Manage muted communities.
  3. On a post Reddit recommended, choose Show fewer posts like this.
  4. In your settings, turn off the setting for recommendations in your home feed. Reddit’s pages call it Show recommendations in home feed in one place and Personalized Recommendations in another.

A muted community drops out of your notifications, your Home feed and Popular, up to a thousand of them. Reddit does not say it drops out of search or r/all, and you can still visit it. Turning notifications back on for a muted community unmutes it. Recommendations off means no posts from communities you do not follow, and does nothing about the ones you already do.

Close the door on chat

  1. In Safety, tap Chat and messaging permissions.
  2. Under Allow chat requests from, choose Nobody. The other choices are Everyone and Accounts older than 30 days.
  3. Back in Safety, turn off Allow people to follow you.

Moderators can still send you requests. To block one account, open its profile, tap the three dots and choose Block account. A blocked account cannot message or reply to you, but blocking does not reach ads, and a new account is a new start.

  1. In your settings, open Manage notifications, then Recommendations, and turn off Trending posts.
  2. Under Media and animations, turn off Autoplay video previews.

The one that holds

Reddit has no setting that is hard for you to remove. One thing is different, though: the mature-content switch is on the website, so changing it needs a browser sign-in. If someone you trust holds your Reddit password and you stay signed out of the browser, you cannot switch it on. That is a decision about your password, not a Reddit feature, and Reddit does not describe it.

The lock that does not depend on that is outside Reddit. A limit set in your iPhone’s own Screen Time belongs to the phone, and it can be put behind a passcode you do not know.

  1. Open the iPhone’s Settings, then Screen Time. If it is off, turn it on.
  2. Tap App Limits, then Add Limit.
  3. Find Reddit in the list and tick it. The list has a search box at the top. Then, at the bottom of the list under Websites, tap Add Website and add reddit.com. Without that, a limit on the app does not cover it in Safari.
  4. Tap Next, set the time, and turn on Block at End of Limit.
  5. Back on the Screen Time page, tap Lock Screen Time Settings and set a passcode that someone you trust chooses and keeps. Without it, you can extend your own limit with one tap.

That last step is what Bramble’s Keyholder mode is for. The keyholder walk-through takes the person you ask through setting it on your phone, one screen at a time.

If it is still there afterward

Settings change what the screen offers. They do not change what you are reaching for. When a man has cleaned up his settings and still goes looking, it is usually because something else is being eased, and porn is only the fastest thing he found for it. That is not a verdict on you.

The ten questions are one honest place to look at it. Why can’t I stop watching porn is the longer version.
