How to block porn on Chrome.
Chrome has no porn filter of its own for a grown man’s profile. The closest thing it has is Google’s SafeSearch, which cleans up Google’s results and nothing else. To block porn in Chrome itself, you need an extension, and Bramble’s is free.
This page walks through SafeSearch, then Bramble for Chrome, step by step. It says plainly what an extension can and cannot do, and shows the one setup that holds at one in the morning.
Turn on SafeSearch
- In Chrome, go to google.com/safesearch.
- Choose Filter. It hides explicit results: images, videos and links. Blur only blurs explicit images, and the links still show.
- It only covers Google. Another search engine, or a site typed straight into the address bar, is not touched.
- You can switch it back off from the same page, in the same two clicks.
It is still worth turning on. Bramble keeps SafeSearch on once it is installed, so this step is only for the minutes before then.
Add Bramble to Chrome
The extension runs in Chrome, Edge, Brave and on ChromeOS, and needs Chrome 120 or later.
- Open Bramble in the Chrome Web Store and click Add to Chrome.
- Click the puzzle-piece icon at the right of the toolbar and pin Bramble, so its mark stays in view.
- Pair it with your iPhone. Click the Bramble mark, then Get a pairing code. On your iPhone, open Bramble and go to Settings › My Screens › Pair a screen, enter the code and tap Pair it. Connecting Chrome and your Mac has every step.
- Let it into incognito windows. Paste chrome://extensions into the address bar, find Bramble, click Details and turn on Allow in Incognito. Chrome keeps every extension out of incognito until you do, and that is the window a man opens on purpose.
Without the iPhone, the extension still blocks sites on its own. Pairing is what carries your level from the phone, gives a borderline image a second look, and tells your Keyholder, if you have one, when the extension comes off.
What it blocks
- Porn sites, before they load, from a list of more than 1.2 million domains that keeps being updated.
- Explicit images and video on the page. A model in the browser judges what it can. When it is unsure, the image’s web address, or a few frames of the video, go to Bramble for a second look. The text of the page is never sent.
- The feeds that push it. Instagram Explore and Reels, TikTok’s For You, X’s Explore and Reddit’s r/all send you to the following or home view instead.
- The quiet ways round. SafeSearch stays on, and the browser’s own secure-DNS route around a filter is closed.
Bramble for Chrome has the full account, and what it sends is in the extension’s privacy policy.
The one that holds
Any browser extension can be removed in two clicks by the man at the keyboard. That is the honest shape of one, and no extension changes it on its own. What changes it is the computer around the browser.
- On a Mac, get Bramble for Mac, open its Protection page and click Cover Chrome too on the Chrome card. It installs a profile that puts Bramble into Chrome from the Mac’s side, with nothing to type, and closes Chrome’s incognito and guest windows, which Chrome turns every extension off in. Brave works the same way, from its own card. Then a Screen Time passcode someone you trust chooses keeps the Mac’s own settings where you put them. How to block porn on a Mac walks through it.
- On a Windows PC or a Chromebook, nothing Bramble can install locks the extension in. What it can do is make removing it visible: if you take it off while it is paired, your Keyholder is told that this browser lost coverage. Never a site, a search, or anything you looked at.
That is what Bramble’s Keyholder is for. A lock you can open yourself is friction. A person who is told is witness, and witness is what holds.
If it is still there afterward
A blocker changes what the screen offers. It does not change what you are reaching for. When a man has locked his browser down and still goes looking, it is usually because something else is being eased, and porn is only the fastest thing he found for it. That is not a verdict on you.
The ten questions are one honest place to look at it. Do porn blockers work? is the longer version. On a phone, How to block porn on an iPhone walks the same ground there.
